June 2010

Winter is upon us and I don't know about you, but the cold wet weather always makes me want soup. If you don't want to make your own, there are some delicious, healthy options available.

The good folks at Naked Organics have put out a new range of soups, called Naked Locals. Made from mostly local produce, they flavours include Pukekohe Potato and Leek, Ohakune Carrot and Coriander, Hawkes Bay Organic Golden Pumpkin, and Asparagus and Spinach soup from the Bay of Plenty.

My picks out of this bunch? The pumpkin soup and carrot soup were my favourites, and Mr H loved the asparagus and spinach.

RRP $5.99 from supermarkets.

Kai to Pie exhibition opens at Auckland MuseumKai to Pie: Auckland on a Plate exhibition opens at the Auckland Museum 12 June. Now this is my kind of exhibition, a celebration of Auckland's history and diverse culture through its food.

Cleverly grouped into a 'four course meal' - based around four elements: Fashion, Feast, Fuel and Future - we are taken on a journey around Auckland food.

Visitors on Saturdays can see cooking demonstrations, enjoy some tastings and see cultural performances.

Keep an eye out for the Trolley Dolly for some yummy treats and during the school holidays, there's the Family Food Fiesta.

This sounds like it'll be a great exhibition for locals and visitors alike.

Ecostore Auto Dishwash TabEcostore have entered the dishwash tablet market with their Auto Dishwash Tablets. Packaged in a box containing 30 tablets, it works out at 50 cents per load. That is on par, or even cheaper than some other dishwash tablets.

What I like about the Ecostore dish tablets is that perform highly in stain removal, limescale prevention, glass protection and spot and streak prevention whilst containing no phosphates, EDTA or synthetic dyes and perfumes. This ensures that anything that goes down the dishwasher pipes is non-toxic to fish and mammals. What this really boils down to, is that it cleans the dishes very well and is kind to the environment.

Each table is individually wrapped, but it's a water-soluble wrapper so just pop it in your diswasher like normal, and go.

Ecostore Auto Dishwash Tablets are available in boxes of 30, for $14.99 from supermarkets and health stores nationwide.

Sari apronOn my journey to be a more sustainable and fairtrade business, I stumbled across this website, Marketplacers. Fairtrade workers produce some wonderful products like jute bags and sari rugs. But what I was most interested in, was the repurposed sari aprons. Beautiful! I love the lively colours and patterns.

May 2010

From 6-12 May, Bakers Delight bakeries throughout New Zealand are turning pink in the hope of raising thousands for women with cancer. In this special week-long campaign, Bakers Delight bakeries will donate $1 from every pink finger bun sold to Look Good Feel Better, a free national service that supports women being treated for all types of cancer and helps them feel better by looking good.

JAZZ Apples are out! They are sweet and super crunchy, delicious. I have one as a healthy afternoon snack. I also love grating a JAZZ apple into your muesli and having it with a bit of yoghurt and milk.

Monterey is a new neighbourhood bar in Newtown, Wellington. They are loosely themed around mid-century Californian writer's retreats with vintage tyewriters, homemade style shelving, books, games and jigsaw puzzles. Sounds like my kind of place, a relaxing second home!
Find them at 4 Rintoul st, Newtown.

Last week I bought The Collective's rhubarb and apple gourmet yoghurt from the supermarket. I had it as an alternative to ice cream for dessert and I didn't feel like I was being 'good', it still felt like a treat. Yum! They also do ricotta, mascarpone, cottage cheese, cream cheese and creme fraiche.

I love a good pie and the best pies in Auckland can be found at The Fridge, The Chiller, and now The Food Room. The founder of The Fridge and The Chiller, Angelo, has opened a new shop bringing his famous pies to 250 Ponsonby Road. They are deep, delicious and full of filling.
