I don't know about you, but sometimes after a hard exercise session, I feel like I could eat a horse. If this sounds like you, then choose your post workout snacks wisely as it can have a big impact on how your body uses insulin.

So what is your best bet?

Refuel with a handful of nuts. 10 almonds or 5 brazil nuts. A little lean protein or some healthy fats can help make your body more insulin sensitive. A Ryvita cracker with one tablespoon of cottage cheese, or almond butter is another great option. Translation: Your body absorbs and uses blood sugar more effectively.

Muscle In

Insulin sensitivity is important because the more insulin sensitive you are, the less likely you are to develop diabetes.

In a recent U.S study, they've found that carbohydrate-rich post-workout meals (think white pasta, white bread, chips, and sweets) seemed to have a negative effect on exercisers. Their muscle cells refilled quickly with a sugar-based fuel called glycogen, which seemed to reduce insulin sensitivity. All of which led researchers to conclude that post workout meals should include fats and protein (ideally, healthy versions of each).

Regular Exercise

Regular consistent exercise is one of the keys for preventing blood sugar problems, cutting risk for diabetes by as much as 30 percent in some studies.

The other key to helping keep our blood sugar level, is eating more low Glycemic (G.I) foods.
